The veteran resume: translate, don't transcribe

A civilian hiring manager has six seconds and zero military background. Your job isn't to list what you did. It's to translate it into outcomes they recognize and value. Here's the standard we coach.

01

Lead With the Civilian Title

Open each role with the closest civilian equivalent, then your real billet in parentheses. "Operations Manager (Platoon Sergeant)" tells the reader exactly how to slot you in one line.

02

Quantify Everything

Numbers are the universal language. Led how many people? Managed what budget or equipment value? Cut time or error by what percent? Hard figures beat adjectives every time.

03

Kill the Acronyms

If a civilian wouldn't know it, translate or cut it. "NCOIC of a 40-person section" becomes "Supervised a 40-person department." Save the jargon for the interview, if ever.

Before: Transcribed

"11B Infantry Team Leader. Conducted dismounted patrols and led fire team in tactical operations. NCOIC of weapons maintenance. MOS-qualified, completed PLDC."

After: Translated

"Operations Team Leader (Infantry). Led a 4-person team through 60+ high-pressure missions with zero safety incidents. Owned maintenance and accountability for $1.2M of equipment. Completed accredited leadership development program."

One page for every 10 years of service. Ruthless editing wins.
Start every bullet with an action verb: Led, Built, Cut, Drove, Owned.
Mirror the job posting's language. Match their words to beat the filters.
Lead with leadership. It's the asset civilians most want and least have.
